Excavators are classified by operating weight, and operating weight is a proxy for three things at once: how deep the machine digs, how much it can lift over the side, and how wide it is. On UAE work the third one usually decides the hire. Access to the dig — a villa side passage, a gate, a basement ramp — is the binding constraint far more often than digging capacity is.

These are class ranges, not the specification of any particular machine. Models overlap at the edges and vary by manufacturer. Use the table to pick the class, then take the exact figures from the data plate and spec sheet of the machine you are actually offered.
UAE rental fleets are deepest around a handful of sizes — roughly 1.5–3 t, 5–8 t, 13–15 t, 20–22 t and 30 t and above. Asking for a size between those steps narrows the pool of machines that could actually turn up, so if either neighbouring size will do the job, say so in the enquiry.
Tracked machines spread their mass, hold better on soft or sloping ground, and need a low-bed for every move. Wheeled machines travel between adjacent plots or along a service road under their own power, which removes transport legs from a job spread across a site — but they concentrate load through tyres, need outriggers or a blade for stability when digging, and mark finished surfaces.
A conventional excavator's counterweight swings well outside the track width. A zero or short tail swing machine keeps the tail within or close to the tracks, so it can work hard against a boundary wall, a live carriageway or an adjacent structure without a banksman stopping every slew. On a constrained UAE plot this matters more than the extra tonne of digging force.
Rubber tracks for finished surfaces and interlock; steel tracks for rock, demolition arisings and abrasive ground. On the small machines, a canopy is lighter and narrower; a cab is the only sensible answer for a full summer day on an open site.
A breaker, auger, compactor plate or grab changes the machine specification, not just the rate. The carrier needs the right auxiliary circuit — single-acting for a breaker, double-acting for a rotating or bidirectional tool — with the flow in litres per minute and the working pressure in bar that the tool is rated for. A breaker must be matched to the carrier weight: oversized breaks the machine, undersized never gets through the material. Quote the attachment and the carrier together or you will get a machine that cannot run it.
Measure the tightest gap on the route in — gate leaf, side passage, ramp width, the turn at the top of the ramp — and the headroom if the machine goes under a slab or a soffit. Then check machine transport width and, on the small classes, whether the undercarriage retracts and what the machine's width is with it retracted. This single measurement eliminates more machines than any other.
Maximum dig depth is quoted from the track base on level ground. If the excavation is battered back or shored, the machine stands away from the edge, and the useful figure becomes reach at depth rather than maximum depth. On a trench with a box in it, the machine has to reach over the box and still place the arisings somewhere. Sketch the section before choosing the class.
Tracks spread load; a wheeled machine and any truck feeding it do not. Over a basement slab, a podium deck, a culvert or a services corridor, ask for the ground bearing pressure from the spec sheet and have it checked. Separately, no excavation starts in the UAE until the utility clearances are in hand — the electricity, water, district cooling and telecom authorities each hold their own drawings, and hand-dug trial pits to prove the services are normal practice, not an optional extra.
An excavator used to place pipes, manhole rings, kerbs or precast is lifting, and its rated lift capacity falls with radius and drops further over the side compared with over the front. If lifting is part of the job, say so — it changes the class and it brings the machine's lifting certification into scope.
Breaking is the hardest thing you can ask of a carrier and it is what wears hydraulics and undercarriages. Continuous breaking, a two-shift day, or working in abrasive backfill are all things to declare at enquiry stage rather than discover in the off-hire condition report.
Permit routes, certificate validity periods and working-hour rules differ by emirate, by authority and by free zone, and they change. Treat everything above as the questions to ask, not as a current legal position — confirm the requirement with the authority, the site and the equipment owner before the machine is booked.
