A telehandler is described by two numbers together — maximum lift height and maximum capacity — and neither is available at the same time as the other. It does the work of a rough-terrain forklift and a small crane in one machine, which is why it is the default materials machine on UAE construction sites. The number that decides the hire is capacity at the height and forward reach you actually need.

These are class ranges, not the specification of any particular machine. Models overlap at the edges and vary by manufacturer. Use the table to pick the class, then take the exact figures from the data plate and spec sheet of the machine you are actually offered.
Every telehandler carries a load chart in the cab, and the chart is the machine. Capacity falls away sharply as the boom extends and as it comes down towards horizontal, because both increase the forward moment. A machine rated at 4 t may be a fraction of that at maximum height and forward reach. There is a separate chart for every attachment and for stabilisers deployed versus stowed, and the chart for the attachment on the machine is the one that applies. Two consequences follow:
The height you need is the height of the landing surface, plus the height of the load itself, plus clearance to get the forks over the edge and withdraw them. Landing a pallet of block on a slab edge at 9 m is not a 9 m job. Do the same on the horizontal axis: the forward reach is measured from the machine's standing position to the centre of the load where it lands.
Standoff is what turns a modest lift into a high-reach hire. A perimeter trench, a scaffold, a stack of stored material, a landscaped strip or a live carriageway all push the machine back, and every metre back has to be bought as forward reach at reduced capacity. Establish the standing position before choosing the class.
Machines with stabilisers reach further and carry more at reach, but they need the footprint to deploy and pads to spread the load — a stabiliser foot on loose UAE sand concentrates a large load into a small area. Frame levelling lets the machine square itself on a cross slope, which is what keeps the load chart valid. On soft or made-up ground, ask for the outrigger and wheel loads and provide a prepared standing area.
Forks, a bucket, a jib with a hook, a winch and a man platform all mount to the same carrier and each changes the rate, the load chart and sometimes the certification required. A jib extends the moment arm and cuts capacity hard. A bucket makes it a light loader, not an excavator.
Fitting a man platform puts the telehandler under work-at-height rules rather than materials-handling rules. The platform has to be rated for that carrier, the machine needs the interlocks and controls that permit platform mode, and the platform is inspected in its own right. This is a decision to make before the machine is ordered, not a change of mind on site.
Machine width, stowed height and turning circle against the route in — high-reach and rotating machines are large. Almost all telehandlers are diesel four-wheel drive with two-wheel, four-wheel and crab steering, which is what makes them usable on a congested plot. State the shift pattern and whether the machine is feeding a continuous operation, because that is what decides whether one machine is enough.
Permit routes, certificate validity periods and working-hour rules differ by emirate, by authority and by free zone, and they change. Treat everything above as the questions to ask, not as a current legal position — confirm the requirement with the authority, the site and the equipment owner before the machine is booked.
