JLG vs Genie Scissor Lifts — Which to Rent in the UAE (2026)

JLG and Genie are the two scissor lift brands UAE contractors argue about most. The short answer: both are excellent, parts and service are widely available for both across the UAE, and the rental price difference is negligible. What actually matters is matching the machine to your site — here's how to decide.

The two brands at a glance

JLG (an Oshkosh company) and Genie (a Terex company) are the two dominant aerial work platform manufacturers globally, and both have deep penetration in the UAE rental fleet. If you rent a scissor lift in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you'll almost certainly be offered one or the other.

Bottom line on brand: there is no meaningful price or quality gap between the two in the UAE market. Anyone telling you one is dramatically better is usually just telling you what their own fleet happens to be.

What actually matters: the spec, not the badge

Instead of fixating on JLG vs Genie, focus on these three decisions, which drive far more of your cost and productivity:

1. Electric vs diesel

2. Working height

Both brands offer the same effective height brackets. Don't over-spec — a 12m lift costs roughly double a 6m lift in both daily rate and delivery. Match the platform height to your actual reach requirement plus the standard 2m of human reach above the platform.

3. Platform capacity and width

If you're lifting two workers plus materials, check the platform safe working load (SWL) — typically 230-450kg on standard scissors. For tight indoor aisles (warehouse racking), check the machine width; both brands offer narrow models (around 0.8m) that fit standard aisles.

UAE-specific tip: For indoor mall and warehouse work, electric is increasingly mandated — many Dubai and Abu Dhabi facility managers won't allow diesel machines inside for air-quality reasons. Confirm the site requirement before you book, regardless of brand.

So which should you rent?

Rent whichever brand your supplier has available in the correct spec, at the best price, with the soonest delivery. If both are offered at the same spec and price — and they usually are — pick based on which your operators have used before. Operator familiarity reduces on-site fumbling and is worth more than any brand difference.

The one situation where brand matters: if your project is long-term (3+ months) and you want consistency across a fleet of machines, standardise on one brand so your operators and maintenance team deal with one set of controls and one parts supply chain. Either brand works for this — just pick one and stick with it.

The IPAF requirement applies to both

Whichever brand you rent, Dubai Municipality requires the operator to hold a current IPAF PAL card for any mobile elevating work platform. This is brand-agnostic. If you're hiring with operator, confirm the PAL card before delivery. (See our separate guide on IPAF PAL card requirements for the full detail.)
